Yesterday, the European Commission unveiled the Fertiliser Action Plan to address the consequences of the current geopolitical crisis on the rising fertiliser prices.\u00a0The organic sector\u00a0welcomes\u00a0the\u00a0recognition\u00a0and support for\u00a0organic as a\u00a0nutrient-efficient\u00a0farming system\u00a0contributing to reducing reliance on synthetic fertilisers,<\/strong>\u00a0improving natural soil fertility by closing nutrient cycles and enhancing\u00a0resilience.<\/p>\n

“Achieving 25% of organic land would\u00a0decrease synthetic nitrogen fertiliser use by 2.7 million tonnes,\u00a0that is 26% of the total that might be used without organic farming. This reflects the practical knowledge built by organic farmers in prioritising soil health,\u00a0closing nutrient cycles and minimising\u00a0dependence on external inputs, all while\u00a0remaining\u00a0economically\u00a0viable\u00a0and competitive.<\/p>\n

The Fertiliser Action plan’s recognition of organic farming as\u00a0a\u00a0nutrient-efficient farming\u00a0system\u00a0that must be enhanced and deployed at larger scale\u00a0is\u00a0therefore\u00a0a positive\u00a0outcome of the plan and a recognition of this\u00a0expertise.\u00a0The organic sector welcomes the Commission\u2019s\u00a0commitment\u00a0to\u00a0encourage\u00a0Member States to\u00a0increase\u00a0support for organic\u00a0within\u00a0the current\u00a0CAP<\/strong>,\u00a0recognising\u00a0its contribution to\u00a0sustainable fertiliser use,\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0emphasise the importance of\u00a0organic in the\u00a0national recommendations\u00a0for the CAP post-2027\u00a0to\u00a0reduce dependency on mineral fertilisers”, said Jan Plagge,\u00a0President of IFOAM Organics Europe.<\/p>\n

However, the organic movement stresses that the\u00a0Nitrates Directive must not be weakened under the guise of potential simplification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“For organic farmers across Europe, the Nitrates Directive is a cornerstone for safeguarding the natural resources on which food production depends. The organic movement also questions measures aimed at diversifying synthetic fertiliser supply chains and strengthening domestic fertiliser production, as they risk\u00a0maintaining\u00a0dependency in the long term. Instead, efforts should focus on decreasing the production and use of synthetic fertilisers, whatever their origin, to truly address the root causes of structural dependencies”,\u00a0said Eduardo Cuoco, Director of IFOAM Organics Europe.<\/p>\n
