IFOAM Organics Europe together with farmer’s organisations, environmental NGOs and civil society actors have published a joint\u00a0statement\u00a0warning against the misleading use of\u00a0\u00abregenerative\u00bb\u00a0agriculture in corporate branding and EU policy initiatives.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The signatories caution that regenerative claims risk diverting political attention, public\u00a0resources\u00a0and\u00a0market recognition\u00a0away from genuinely transformative and publicly accountable food system solutions already being implemented across Europe.<\/p>\n

The statement warns that \u201cwhat is called\u00a0\u00abregenerative\u00bb\u00a0can include highly degenerative practices masked by a few cosmetic measures.\u201d\u00a0The signatories also stress that\u00a0millions of farmers and territorial food actors are already building resilient food systems rooted in agroecological and organic principles, delivering concrete environmental and social benefits through credible,\u00a0transparent\u00a0and accountable approaches.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOrganic farming has for decades delivered on the principles now broadly also associated with\u00a0the\u00a0regeneration\u00a0of our\u00a0soils and\u00a0agro-ecosystem, through a legally defined,\u00a0holistic\u00a0and publicly verified framework.\u00a0The concern\u00a0lies\u00a0with undefined narratives that allow input-intensive models, continued reliance on synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, or weak environmental practices to be marketed as sustainability, and not\u00a0with farmers who are genuinely improving soil health,\u00a0biodiversity\u00a0and resilience. Such narratives risk undermining both farmers\u2019 efforts and consumer trust,\u201d said Jan Plagge, President of IFOAM Organics Europe.<\/p>\n

The joint statement further highlights that \u201cIn EU policy documents and debates,\u00a0a diffuse concept of \u00abregenerative\u00bb agriculture is increasingly being used to divert policy attention and resources from truly transformative solutions.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue is not whether farmers use the word regenerative,\u00a0but\u00a0whether EU policy and markets reward real transformation or vague claims. Public support, sustainability\u00a0reporting\u00a0and corporate sourcing strategies must be based on clear criteria, public\u00a0accountability\u00a0and verifiable\u00a0benefits for ecosystems. Organic and agroecological systems already offer credible pathways for this transition; they should not be weakened by undefined concepts that allow business-as-usual practices to be rebranded as sustainability,<\/strong>\u201d said Eduardo Cuoco, Director of IFOAM Organics Europe.<\/p>\n

The signatories call on EU policymakers and market actors to support coherent transition pathways,\u00a0while strengthening environmental standards and consumer trust.\u00a0\u201cEurope must ensure that actions speak\u00a0louder\u00a0than words<\/strong>\u00a0and that future transitions remain credible, transparent, grounded in the public interest, and anchored in verifiable and publicly governed approaches\u201d,\u00a0the statement concludes.<\/p>\n
