In recent months, conversations about pesticide exposure and pesticide residues detected in the human body have been attracting considerable attention on social media, podcasts and wellness platforms. Alongside them comes an obvious question: what can consumers do to reduce their exposure? For the organic sector, this represents an important opportunity and perhaps a responsibility.<\/p>\n
For years, organic food has been promoted primarily through its environmental benefits: healthier soils, biodiversity, fewer synthetic inputs, animal welfare and more sustainable farming systems. These remain fundamental reasons to support organic farming. But the current debate about pesticides brings another aspect of organic production directly into consumers\u2019 everyday lives: choosing organic products can significantly reduce dietary exposure to pesticides.<\/p>\n

What happens when switching to organic food?<\/h2>\n
One study asked adults to follow a diet consisting of at least 80% organic food for one week and compared the results with a conventional diet. After the organic phase, the average level of total dialkylphosphate metabolites (biomarkers associated with exposure to organophosphate pesticides) measured in urine was 89% lower.<\/p>\n
The speed of the change is particularly striking. It did not take months or years: a significant difference was observed after just seven days.<\/p>\n
Other research has reached similar conclusions. An intervention in the United States involving adults and children found significant reductions in 13 pesticide compounds or metabolites after participants adopted an organic diet. These represented several groups of pesticides, including organophosphates, neonicotinoids and pyrethroids, as well as the herbicide 2,4-D.<\/p>\n
More recent research continues to reinforce this conclusion. A study published in 2023 found significant reductions in several organophosphate metabolites in urine after just six days on an organic diet.<\/p>\n
Systematic reviews examining the overall body of evidence therefore reach a relatively consistent conclusion: one of the clearest demonstrated differences associated with consuming organic food is lower exposure to pesticides.<\/p>\n
This distinction matters. Research does not yet allow us to claim that eating organic food for a week will prevent a particular disease, and the organic industry should resist the temptation to turn legitimate scientific findings into exaggerated health promises. What the evidence does allow us to communicate is simpler, more tangible and still very powerful: changing how our food is produced can change our exposure to pesticides.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We often talk about soil fertility, biodiversity, pollinators, crop rotation and restrictions on synthetic pesticides. Pesticide exposure makes the dialogue with end consumers deeply personal.<\/p>\n For a consumer choosing between two bottles of oil, two bags of flour or two pieces of fruit, biodiversity can sometimes be difficult to visualise. The idea that a purchasing decision can directly influence dietary exposure to pesticides is much easier to understand.<\/p>\n It also helps answer one of the most frequently asked questions in our sector: why should I pay more for organic products?<\/p>\n The answer should not be based on fear. Conventional foods sold in Europe are subject to strict food safety requirements and maximum residue limits. Therefore, the organic sector should never portray conventional foods as unsafe. Instead, we can offer consumers something increasingly valuable: the opportunity to reduce exposure.<\/p>\n Organic production severely restricts the use of synthetic pesticides. Consequently, lower pesticide exposure is not an accidental side effect of organic farming; it is directly linked to the design of the farming system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The idea that a purchasing decision can directly influence dietary exposure to pesticides is much easier to understand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Consumer trends change rapidly. Some disappear almost as quickly as they emerge. But the growing interest in what accumulates in our bodies or passes through them reflects something deeper: people are increasingly seeking transparency about the relationship between food, farming and personal well-being.<\/p>\n The organic sector already has decades of experience addressing precisely this relationship. Rather than allowing the conversation about pesticides to be dominated by detox products, supplements or questionable wellness claims, the organic industry can bring something far more valuable to the discussion: a practical food choice supported by quantifiable evidence.<\/p>\n We must communicate this carefully. We must avoid fear. And we must be transparent about what science can and cannot yet demonstrate. But we must communicate it.<\/p>\n For years, we have explained that choosing organic products can transform agriculture.
