UK organic market now worth a record \u00a33.05 billion<\/strong>, Soil Association 2022 Organic Market Report<\/strong> published reveals. Despite Brexit and Covid-19 situations, organic market sales grow by 5.2%<\/strong>, marking the tenth consecutive year of growth. It confirms continued strong performance across all areas of retail, including supermarket home delivery services (+2.4%), independent retailers (+9%) and foodservice (+3.3%), the report proves.<\/p>\n

Soil Association 2022 Organic Market Report<\/h2>\n

Soil Association<\/strong>‘s annual Organic Market Report 2022<\/strong>\u00a0shows that in 2021 organic saw 5.2% growth<\/strong>, with almost \u00a360 million<\/strong> being spend weekly on organic food and drink. Organic\u2019s continuing strong performance in 2021 helped move its share of total food sales to 1.8% (up from 1.6% in 2020).<\/p>\n

The strongest growth in 2021 came from beers, wines and spirits<\/strong> (16.9%) and baby food and drink<\/strong> (16.1%). As for the leading organic categories for supermarkets, dairy<\/strong> up by 0.7%, reaching almost \u00a3500 million; produce<\/strong> up 1.8%, sitting at \u00a3437 million; ambient grocery<\/strong> down 6.2%, at \u00a3315 million; and meat, fish and poultry now at \u00a3202 million after a rise of 5.5%. These overall top four categories make up 74% of sales.<\/p>\n

Non-food categories<\/strong> also showed continued strong growth in 2021. Sales of organic and natural beauty products grew by 15% in 2021 to reach 135 million pounds. Soil Association certified organic textiles grew by 39% to reach a value of over \u00a368 million.<\/p>\n

Home delivery and online sales<\/h3>\n

Home delivery<\/strong> \u2013including box schemes and online\u2013 was the standout performer as for retail channels, growing at 13% (to be worth \u00a3558 million). Report admits ‘another mixed year’ for i<\/strong>ndependent retailers<\/strong>,\u00a0which grew by 9% to be worth \u00a3447, partly due to the expansion of specialist chains. Supermarket growth was slower at 2.4%, but more pronounced compared to the negative growth recorded in the same period for conventional food (0.2%). However, growth in organic food services was rather weak at 3.3%.<\/p>\n

Awarness rising<\/h3>\n

In terms of organic farmland, there was a 12% increase in the area of land being converted to organic<\/strong>, while the total area of land farmed organically remained \u201clargely flat\u201d at 0.8%. Despite that, the data collected also show optimistic figures on consumer patterns. 71% of consumers have become more concerned<\/strong> about the environment since the pandemic, 86% want food produced in more natural ways, and 56% of shoppers are concerned about the impact of food packaging on the environment.<\/p>\n
