In 2023, Ecovalia will organize the European Organic Congress in Spain. The event will be held from 26 to 28 September in Cordoba coinciding with the Spanish presidency of the European Union during the second half of this year, together with IFOAM Organics Europe and with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAPA) and the Junta de Andalucía, the organization announced at BIOFACH.
President of Ecovalia, Alvaro Barrera, expressed his satisfaction: “the fact that the European Organic Congress is held in our country, with the help of Ecovalia, is a great opportunity for Spain to be in the focus of European organic production during 2023. This congress will be a meeting point for innovation, promotion and consumption strategies for our sector”.
The event was attended by Purificación González, deputy director general for promotion of MAPA and Eduardo Cuoco, director of IFOAM Organics Europe.
Latest data on the sector
At BIOFACH the latest statistics from FIBL and IFOAM also were released. Data confirms that the growth of organic production continues to rise with a global area that now exceeds 76 million hectares. In this regard, Africa has been the continent that has grown the most in the world with 17.3%. As for Spain, it is the third fastest growing country in the world. China ranks first in this growth with 318,700 hectares (13.1%), followed by France with 227,877 (8.9%) and Spain with 197,551 (8.1%).
The European average of organic farmland is 9.63%, while in Spain this reaches 10.8% of area devoted to organic production.
On the other hand, Ecovalia‘s stand hosted the institutional reception attended by regional and European public representatives, as well as international companies, a meeting in which they were able to learn about the good work being done by Spanish companies and the quality of the products they put on the market. Under the slogan ‘Now is the time! Consume organic’, the Spanish professional association of organic production has shared one of its strategic objectives which is to increase consumption in Spain.
Attending the reception were Joao Pinto, Deputy Director of the Cabinet of the European Commissioner for Agriculture; Petra Wolf, Director General of the Nürnberg Messe and Silvia Nieto, Director General of Agri-environmental Policies of Castilla La Mancha.
