Tradin Organic, the global supplier of organic brands and retailers, has announced a 2.5 million euro collaborative project with the European Union (EU) to scale its agroforestry cocoa implementation in Sierra Leone. The organic leader has developed business in the country since 2015 and aims to strengthen and scale the country’s export of high-quality, Fairtrade organic cocoa.

Over the next three years, the joint project will contribute to deforestation prevention and improved cocoa farmer livelihoods by scaling regenerative agroforestry systems. In Sierra Leone, Tradin’s local team of 60 people works closely together with the farmer cooperatives and its sources of cocoa beans by providing training, tools and plants to set up such systems. Now, the previous projects of the global supplier have been merged and a 1.85 million Euro grant from the Delegation of the European Union to Sierra Leone enables the consortium to expand the work and impact.

The goal is to boost production and strengthen the organic export from Sierra Leone, a country that is still rebuilding after a period of civil conflicts and the Ebola outbreak. This initiative offers an excellent opportunity to support more farmer communities and for confectionery manufacturers, retailers and brands to source high-quality organic cocoa while supporting sustainable and responsible sourcing practices.

Tradin Organic’s supply chain in Sierra Leone includes hundreds of villages and thousands of farmers

Tradin Organic’s supply chain in Sierra Leone includes hundreds of villages and thousands of farmers. The agroforestry program runs through 153 farmer field schools, and 57 Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLA’s), which are farmer-led microbanks connected to its child protection program. The EU grant will add another 50 villages to the program.

Since Tradin started developing its business in the country in 2015, it has seen a steadily growing interest from natural and sustainable brands and retailers across Europe and the US. With their cocoa processing facility in the Netherlands, named Crown of Holland, Tradin Organic is also capable of processing organic, amongst other certifications, speciality cocoa beans into cocoa powder, butter, and liquor. It enables them to offer a steady supply of cocoa products to the market that is traceable from origin to the table.
