IFOAM Organics Europe welcomes the proposal for a targeted amendment of the Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848, which confirms a focused and pragmatic approach from the Commission, addressing a limited number of clearly identified issues while fully preserving the principles and high standards of organic farming.
Building on the success of organic farming in Europe, the proposal recognises the need to provide stability to a sector that has demonstrated its capacity to deliver both environmental benefits and socio-economic value across diverse territories. Organic farming is a production method recognised in EU legislation as a sustainable farming system delivering simultaneously for the environment, farmers, rural communities and consumers.
Eduardo Cuoco, director of IFOAM Organics Europe, said: “A stable and predictable regulatory framework is essential for organic farmers and operators across Europe, especially for a sector that has grown steadily over the past years and proven its contribution to resilient food systems and rural development. We look forward to working constructively with the European Parliament and Member States to ensure a swift adoption, providing legal certainty and continuity for the organic sector. The Commission’s targeted approach is the right way forward to consolidate the achievements of organic farming in Europe while enabling further development.
We also look forward to the publication of the Commission’s “roadmap” on the organic legal framework, which, according to current indications, is expected tomorrow, complementing today’s proposal by addressing implementation aspects. IFOAM Organics Europe is committed to continuing its close and constructive cooperation with Commissioner Hansen and DG AGRI to support the effective implementation of the “roadmap” and to further develop organic farming across Europe.”
